Interested candidates must complete the admissions process into the college (including the removal of all applicable holds) before they will be considered for enrollment in the AEMT program. Additionally, candidates must hold a current/active TN EMT-Basic License and/or National Registry EMT-Basic Certification to be eligible for a spot in the AEMT program. Candidates will be contacted one time by a member of the Health Sciences Department regarding any outstanding items that are preventing them from being accepted into the program. Only the EMT/AEMT Program Coordinator admits students into the EMT program. Candidates will be contacted by the Program Coordinator to inform them of their acceptance. Please refer all questions regarding program admission/acceptance to EMS Program Director Gregory Johnson at gjohnson27@ColumbiaState.edu.

What is the AEMT Program?
EMTs who wish to further their career and employment opportunities must do so by obtaining their Advanced EMT license. The AEMT course is an academy style, 16 credit hour semester long program designed to further the education by building onto the foundation of the EMT. This course provides students with the necessary didactic and practical training to perform life-saving skills as well as advanced techniques such as intraosseous infusions, intravenous therapy, and some advanced medications.
What about clinical rotation requirements?
Students will schedule and attend 120 hours of clinical rotations outside of class. These rotations will be at clinical sites specified by the instructor cadre. Generally, shifts are divided into 12-hour shifts constituting approximately 10 days of clinical rotations throughout the program.
What times and locations are AEMT classes offered? AEMT is not regularly offered by the EMS Academy since piloting the Integrated Accelerated AEMT program in Fall 2019. If you are interested in the AEMT program and the Request for Enrollment is not posted, please email the EMS Program Director Gregory Johnson at gjohnson27@ColumbiaState.edu stating your interest. He will place you on the email interest list and you will be emailed updates to the program as well as the Request for Enrollment when it comes available. Please understand that this class cannot be offered without a minimum amount of students enrolled, and that the EMS Academy currently only has availability during Summer semesters to consider offering this program.
What is the first step?
Apply for admission to Columbia State Community College. You can apply online or at any of the campuses. Ensure the college has received:
- Fill out the Request for Enrollment
- Proof of MMR Vaccination
- High School Transcript
- All college transcripts
- ACT Scores (if applicable)
- Documentation of Varicella Zoster immunizations (2) or positive titer
What if I’m a returning student?
Students who go directly from EMT to AEMT with no break (spring to summer) will need to email the Health Sciences Records Clerk at healthrecords@ColumbiaState.edu to review what is needed exactly. Background checks and drug screens must NOT be started until told to do so by either the Health Sciences Records Clerk or the EMT/ AEMT Coordinator.
After earning your Advanced EMT license.
Once you’ve spent some time in the field as an AEMT, you may want to further your education to the third and most coveted tier in EMS, Paramedic. The requirements to become a paramedic can be found on the Paramedic Program information option on the main EMS website.
