Columbia State Offers Free Hospice Care Training

(COLUMBIA, Tenn. - Aug. 27, 2014) - - - Columbia State Community College's Center for Workforce Development is offering a free hospice training series for those preparing to handle end-of-life care.

"Living with Hospice - Part 1" includes the history of hospice care and identifies some myths surrounding it. Listen to discussions on the challenges of patients and families in hospice care and also receive information on eligibility for this program. The class will take place Sept. 16 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

"Living with Hospice - Part 2" includes discussion of the qualities of pain and symptom management, identify the signs and symptoms of approaching death, identify psychological needs for dying patients and their families, and discuss the importance of advance care planning. This class will take place Sept. 23 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

"Living with Hospice - Part 3" includes discussion of the difference between religious and spiritual aspects of end-of-life care and the importance of psychological and spiritual issues for dying patients and their families. This class will describe the role of the volunteer coordinator, volunteers in hospice care, and requirements for becoming a volunteer, as well as the bereavement program offered and the difference between pre-bereavement and bereavement. This class will take place Sept. 30 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

All of these courses will take place on the Columbia Campus, located at 1665 Hampshire Pike, and advance registration is required for each course.
