Columbia State Students Attend Tennessee Intercollegiate State Legislature General Assembly

(COLUMBIA, Tenn. - Dec. 21, 2018) - - - Members of the Columbia State Community College Student Government Association and the President's Leadership Society attended the 49th General Assembly of the Tennessee Intercollegiate State Legislature Nov. 15-18 at the Tennessee State Capitol in Nashville.

TISL draws college students from institutions across the state to participate in a mock legislature where they have the opportunity to participate on an executive council, act as representatives, senators, lobbyists or be on the media team. Students can also participate in the Appellate Moot Court Collegiate Challenge where they can argue appellate cases or serve in leadership positions as justices.

This year, delegates Amiee Sadler, (commissioner of diversity and disability for the 2018 TISL Governor's Cabinet), Sakhiba Turaeva (senator), Cody Donnelly (representative), Jenna St. Pierre (representative) and Grant Marsh (lobbyist) represented Columbia State at TISL.

"TISL is an experience unlike any other," Sadler said. "It gives students the opportunity to actively participate in all aspects of the legislative process while building lifelong friendships."

Donnelly received the Carlisle Award, which is TISL's oldest and most prestigious award and is presented to ten outstanding student legislators each year. Sadler, Columbia State SGA vice president, ran for 2019 TISL Governor.

"Overall, TISL was an excellent experience for our Columbia State delegation," said Adam Robertson, Columbia State director of student engagement and services. "They gained hands-on experience and developed an appreciation of how Tennessee government works. The enthusiasm has spilled over into students planning for next year's 50th General Assembly of TISL."

Columbia State's TISL delegation was chosen in Oct. through an application process that was open to all students. Applications for next year's delegation will be available fall 2019.
